Rehearsal, Real Moments, and Good Food...

Our first full day of rehearsal began with cheerful smiles, friendly “good morning” greetings, and—at least as far as I was aware (being the blissfully oblivious one)—everyone was on time. That was especially impressive considering we’d been asked to arrive a bit early so we could jump into the day without delay. Spirits were high,  and it felt like everyone was ready to give their best.

We dove right into vocal stretches and warmups. Lip trills filled the room (some more dramatic than others), and the usual rhythms of start, stop, and repeat quickly took over. There was a lot of practice... and then more practice. And then a final, "One more time." It’s the kind of day that builds more than just sound; it builds stamina, focus, and confidence.

We were led by our faithful director, Lyle, who kept us focused and encouraged throughout the day. He shared helpful tips for singing with precision and confidence, and his quick sense of humor had us laughing often—which made the work lighter and the day more enjoyable.

Lunch was a highlight, served with care by our tour general manager, Katrina. Not only does she keep us organized, she makes us feel so cared for by preparing a delicious lunch (and even offers to bring you a much needed cup of coffee) —and on long days like this, that’s no small gift. It was a much-needed pause, full of good food and even better company.

The afternoon brought more rehearsing, and as always, we found ourselves raising our hands to claim the occasional mistake. It’s a humbling but helpful rhythm—one that keeps us honest and growing.

Somewhere in the middle of it all, a lyric hit me differently. One of the pieces I've sung over and over on my own—lyrics I thought I knew—suddenly struck a chord in a deeper place. It is well, with my soul...a declaration from a full heart. As the text began to take root in my heart, I found myself near tears. That’s the power of music rooted in truth. That even while focusing on entrances and cutoffs, the truth we sing can slip past our heads and settle into our souls.

We broke off into smaller sectionals at points during the day, giving each part time to hammer out tricky intervals and lock in harmonies before returning together—and when we did, the pieces began to bloom. There’s something so satisfying about hearing the sound take shape and knowing it’s becoming more than just notes.

Another break gave folks the choice between naps or snacks and visiting. Both were excellent decisions.

By the end of the rehearsal day, we all noted the same thing—it felt like the day had flown by. Tired, yes. But fulfilled.

The evening took us back to the lovely home of Cliff and Trina, where Trina, as always, went above and beyond with a beautiful meal. It’s more than just food—it’s hospitality that makes you feel like family. It was an unhurried evening filled with laughter and genuine conversation.

Now it’s time for rest before we do it all again tomorrow. Grateful for music, for people, and for these moments in between.
